Tiffney Family

This is my great-grandmother’s family and they are predominantly to be found in Lanarkshire and Angus or Forfarshire. Ultimately they come from Ireland, but at the moment I am unsure of where they emigrated from.

At the moment the earliest confirmed date is in the 1850s.

Here are the families as I have them at the moment…

  • Daniel Tiffney & Winifred O’Connor (? – before 1870)
    • Mary (c.1813 – 1875)  m. James Murphy
    • Michael (c.1821 – 1870)  m. Ann Fawcett
    • Patrick/Peter (1824 – 1869)  m. Mary Hall
    • Ann (c.1826 – 1887)
    • Catherine (c.1829 – 1900)
    • Winifred (c.1831 – 1875)  m. James Devlin
  • Michael Tiffney & Ann Fawcett (1821 – 1877)
    • Mary (1851 – 1904)
    • Daniel (1853 – 1906)
    • James (1856 – ?)
    • Francis (1858 – ?)
    • Michael (1860 – ?)
    • Annie (c.1862 – ?)   m. Owen Coyle
    • Bridget (1865 – ?)  m. James Haggerty
  • Daniel Tiffney & Catherine Draper Ritchie (c.1852 – 1912)
    • Daniel Francis (1881 – 1950)  m. Jane Ford
    • Mary (1883 – 1883)
    • Peter (1884 – ?)  m. Rachel Dummiford
    • Janet (1886 – 1949)  m. Matthew Castello
    • Ann (1888 – 1946)  m. William Smith McWilliam
    • Agnes (1889 – 1890)
    • Catherine (1889 – 1890)
    • James (1891 – 1891)
    • Robert (1893 – ?)
    • Margaret (1893-1895)
    • John (1895 – ?)

Please note that Ann Fawcett can also be found in records with her surname translated, transcribed and generally mucked up as: Foset, Fawcet, Fossad, Torcid, Faucit, Fosaid.
You can’t say that they weren’t inventive spellers – no doubt partly caused by the different accent.

If any of these people sounds familiar I would love to hear from you. You can leave a comment, or contact me by email, or join my Tiffney family history group at Yahoo.

  2. Hi,
Stumbled upon your site. My maiden name is Tiffney. My dad was Daniel Tiffney and my grandfather was Robert Tiffney from the New Stevenson area of Motherwell Lanarkshire. I am sure there is a relation somewhere.
    kind regards

    • Hi

I m Jim McCrory. I Live in Bellshill in Lanarkshire. I am the eldest grandson of Dan Tiffney ( My mother was Dan’s eldest daughter Annie Tiffney) Dan had a brother Robert who lived in New Stevenson. I remember him vaguely. He had been a soldier during the war and was quite small in height They called him Midge. Dan was the eldest of a large family of boys who all lived in the general area. Charlie Tiffney was another brother who moved to Corby. I met his son once who was called Daniel Francis, I think that might be the dad of the first girl who put up the first post.
There are still many Tiffneys in the area,

If you think they re the same family get back to me and i’ll see if I can add any more of interest.

      Regards

      Jim

      • Hi,

My dad was in fact Danny Tiffney and his father was Charles Tiffney. I only met him a couple of times before he died in 1999 but am very interested in the Tiffney family tree. Would love some more information on the family so I can pass this on to my children. Am I right in thinking that your father would have been my great uncle? Best wishes

      • Hi Jim, My name is Dianne and my father was Daniel Francis Tiffney from Gartcosh. He had brothers and sisters – Robert, Peter, Bill, Tommy, Rachael, Kathy, Annette and some of them I’ve forgotten their names. Would be interested to know how I am related to Tiffney members in and around Bellshill and New Stevenson, look forward to hearing from you

        • Hi Dianne,
Well we are definitely related then. :)
Which Daniel Francis Tiffney was your father? I have two in my extended tree already.
Was he the son of Peter Tiffney? I don’t have the full family but many of the names you mention I have noted as children of Peter and Rachel Dummiford.

  3. Hi Jim thanks for your reply. My father Daniel francis Tiffney was the son of Peter and I,ve always been told my grandmother,s name was Rachael Dimiloe , don,t know if the spelling has changed over the years but it does sound similar to Dummiford.
