Five Books

Oh I love it when a good recommendation comes my way.
If I didn’t have a ridiculous* number of blogs in my feedreader I can’t think of how many really interesting things I might miss out on.

Today’s little gem comes by way of one of my perennial favourites – Unclutterer.
This review promptly sent me scampering away in my browser to see what was on offer.  Today’s topic: “Why Russia isn’t a Democracy”

The premise of Five Books is that someone learned** suggest five key books on their topic of interest.

Here is their tagline:

Become an instant expert

And a description of what they do:

FiveBooks – Become an expert with FiveBooks.

Every day an eminent writer, thinker, commentator, politician, academic chooses five books on their specialist subject. From Einstein to Keynes, Iraq to the Andes, Communism to Empire. Read the interviews, share in the knowledge, buy the books.

And now it is proudly sitting at number 97 in NetNewsWire and I’m sure that I will be taking a browse through the archives.  What a great resource for keeping up with whatever you (and your kids) are interested in.  I can see a run on the local library or Uni Library coming on. (If the cost of textbooks and serious non-fiction is still what it was – ouch!)

* currently at 96, but at the beginning of NaBloPoMo it was 120 !
** I’ll defer to your considerably better understanding, Sol, on whether Martin Sixsmith can be considered knowledgeable enough to trust his choices for today’s topic.

  1. That is a very cool site. I like the way the pickers commentate their choices. And they weren’t what I was expecting – I thought the Russian one would be all political textbooks, but no. Interesting.

Not sure I agree with the man though. Russia just hasn’t had a long enough run at reasonably prosperous stability. Still, that’s not the point of the beauty of the site!
